South Western City Schools will open the 2026-2027 Kindergarten enrollment window starting the week of January 26th!
Eligibility Changes: New State Law Moves K Enrollment Deadline
A new state law has changed the age requirement for kindergarten enrollment. House Bill 114, signed into law on December 19, now requires all school districts to admit any child who is 5 years old on or before the first day of school. In South Western City Schools, this new deadline will be our first day of school on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Previously, children with birth days up to September 30 each year were eligible for kindergarten enrollment.
Please note that preschool enrollment requirements have not changed:
- A preschool child eligible for special education services shall be at least age three and not age six, with the following exception:
- A child younger than three years of age may be eligible if the child will be three by October 31st of the current calendar year, and the child will receive special education and related services beginning the first day of the school year, unless an alternative start date is determined by the IEP team, which must include the child's parent.
Are You a Current Preschool / Head Start / Early Childhood Education Family? Read This:
If your child is in our Special Needs Preschool, Peer Model, Head Start, or Early Childhood Education (ECE) program and is going to Kindergarten,
do not register again. They are already enrolled and will automatically move up to Kindergarten for
2026-2027. Your child's Preschool teacher will contact you later this year about what happens next.
