EL Services Provided

Grade Band Models of Instruction
Elementary (K-4):

The elementary model will consist of small group pull-out service with a TESOL teacher, as well as a co-teaching model of instruction with a focus on Literacy Collaborative strategies and blended ELA and ELP standards.  Data teams will include TESOL staff, and all domains of language are addressed while working through second language acquisition strategies.

Intermediate (5-6):
The intermediate  model continues the approach of small group pull-out service with a TESOL teacher, as well as a co-teaching model of instruction with a focus on Literacy Collaborative strategies and blended ELA and ELP standards.  Data teams will include TESOL staff, and all domains of language are addressed while working through second language acquisition strategies. This grade band is the first to introduce Sheltered Instruction (SIOP) teams that include language and content strategies in the subjects of mathematics, science, and social studies.

Middle School (7-8):
The middle school model is the first grade band where the TESOL teacher is the primary teacher of record for an EL student’s report card grade. A continued focus on balanced literacy, blended ELA and standards, and SLA strategies drives instruction at this level, and the intentional focus on identifying and providing SIOP-based lessons in mathematics, science, and social studies increases, as well.

High School (9-12):
The high school model continues the grade band approach where the TESOL teacher is the primary teacher of record for an EL student’s report card grade.  A continued focus on balanced literacy, blended ELA and standards, and SLA strategies drives instruction at this level, and the intentional focus on identifying and providing SIOP-based lessons in mathematics, science, and social studies increases, as well.  EL’s at this grade band are also eligible for inclusion in programs at the South-Western Career Academy (SWCA), and language support is provided for students looking to enter college and career-based programs there.
