November 19, 2020 Parent Message - Transition to Remote Learning 2.0

November 19, 2020

Dear South-Western Families,

At 4:52 this evening we received the following communication from Franklin County Public Health:

“In response to the Ohio Public Advisory System designating Franklin County Level 4 or “purple,” Franklin County Public Health is issuing the following clarifying guidance to all public and private K-12 schools.

The health department has issued a Stay at Home advisory for all residents effective November 20-December 18. This guidance acknowledges the need for only essential activities including work and school. In that advisory, schools are recommended to maintain their current modality of learning to the extent possible and discontinue extracurricular activities. Public health is concerned about possible transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and more cases of COVID-19 as a result of potential spread during the Thanksgiving break. In order to minimize that potential, schools are encouraged to transition to remote learning after the Thanksgiving Holiday and remain in virtual learning for the duration of the advisory period.”

We have reviewed the available data, listened to Governor DeWine, and talked with our local health departments. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to staff our operations with the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Franklin County and the number of individuals who need to quarantine due to close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus. Our health officials continue to stress and our experiences prove that school is a safe place for students and staff with layered protocols in place. Unfortunately, community conditions do have an impact on our ability to staff and operate our schools.

We are hopeful that by following the recommendations of our public health officials and transitioning to a fully remote learning environment after Thanksgiving break and remaining in that model through winter break, more favorable conditions and staffing levels will result as we start the new calendar year. In following the health department recommendations:

  • The last in-person day for blue students will be November 23, 2020; and

  • The last in-person day for green students will be November 20, 2020.

You will be receiving additional information from your child’s teacher and school. This will include meal pick-up instructions during remote learning.

Being physically present in school is important to the social, emotional, and educational growth of our students, but we also need to keep the safety of our students and staff at the center of our decision-making process. According to many of the reports we have seen, spread of the virus continues to take place in settings primarily outside of our schools and we know this has the potential to make community conditions less than favorable, which in turn means our ability to adequately staff our classrooms is less likely. We are hopeful that by making this decision now families and staff will have a better opportunity to plan for the transition.

We will continue to review our local data and talk with our health agencies to assist us in our future planning. We will be communicating again on December 17 to update you on conditions and plans for the new calendar year. Thank you for your support during these challenging times.

Stay healthy. Stay safe.

Dr. Bill Wise, Superintendent

Manténgase a salvo.

Dr. Bill Wise, Superintendente

Nofeembar 19, 2020

Qoysaska Qaaliga ah ee Koonfur-Galbeed,

4:52 fiidnimo waxaan ka helnay xiriirkan soo socda Franklin County Public Health:

“Iyada oo laga jawaabayo Nidaamka La-talinta Dadweynaha ee Ohio ee loogu magac daray Franklin County Heerka 4 ama “guduud,” Caafimaadka Dadweynaha ee Degmada Franklin ayaa soo saareysa tilmaamaha soo socda ee cadeya dhamaan dugsiyada gaarka loo leeyahay iyo kuwa gaarka loo leeyahay ee K-12.

Waaxda caafimaadka waxay soo saartay latalin joogitaan guriga ah dhamaan dadka degan laga bilaabo Nofeembar 20-Disembar 18. Hagahan wuxuu qirayaa baahida loo qabo kaliya howlaha muhiimka ah oo ay kujiraan shaqada iyo iskuulka. La talintaas, iskuulada waxaa lagula talinayaa inay ilaashadaan qaabkooda waxbarasho ee hadda sida ugu macquulsan oo ay u joojiyaan howlaha ka baxsan manhajka. Caafimaadka bulshada wuxuu ka walaacsan yahay gudbinta suurtagalka ah ee SARS-CoV-2 iyo kiisas badan oo ah COVID-19 taasoo ka dhalan karta faafitaanka dhici kara inta lagu jiro nasashada Mahadcelinta. Si loo yareeyo awoodaas, dugsiyada waxaa lagu dhiirigelinayaa inay u gudbaan waxbarashada fog ka dib Fasaxa Thanksgiving-ka oo ay ku sii jiraan barashada cilmiga ah inta lagu jiro muddada la-talinta. ”

Waxaan dib u eegnay xogta jirta, waan dhageysanay Gudoomiyaha DeWine, waxaanna lahadalnay waaxdayada caafimaadka ee deegaanka. Way sii adkaanaysaa in lagu shaqaaleeyo howlaheena iyadoo tirada sii kordheysa ee kiisaska COVID-19 ee degmada Franklin iyo tirada shaqsiyaadka u baahan in karantiil la dhigo sababo la xiriira xiriir dhow oo lala yeesho qof laga helay fayraska. Saraakiisheena caafimaadka ayaa sii wadaya walwalka khibradaheena waxay cadeynayaan in iskuulku yahay meel nabdoon oo ardayda iyo shaqaalaha leh borotokoolka lakabyada leh. Nasiib darrose, xaaladaha bulshada ayaa saameyn ku leh awoodda aan u leenahay shaqaalaha iyo ka shaqeynta dugsiyadeena.

Waxaan ku rajo weynahay markaan raacno talooyinka saraakiisheena caafimaadka bulshada una wareego jawi waxbarasho oo fog fog ka dib nasashada Thanksgiving oo aan kusii nagaano qaabkaas ilaa nasashada jiilaalka, xaalado aad u wanaagsan iyo heerarka shaqaalaynta ayaa ka dhalan doona markaan bilowno sanadka taariikheed ee cusub. In la raaco talooyinka waaxda caafimaadka:

  • Maalintii ugu dambaysay ee shaqsi ahaan loogu talagalay ardayda buluuga ah waxay noqon doontaa Nofeembar 23, 2020; iyo

  • Maalinta shaqsiyeed ee ugu dambeysa ardayda cagaaran waxay noqon doontaa Nofeembar 20, 2020.

Waxaad ka heli doontaa macluumaad dheeri ah macalinka ilmahaaga iyo iskuulkiisa. Tan waxaa ku jiri doona tilmaamaha soo-qaadashada cuntada inta lagu jiro barashada fog.

Jiritaanka jiritaanka dugsiga waxay muhiim u tahay koritaanka bulshada, shucuurta, iyo waxbarashada ardaydeena, laakiin waxaan sidoo kale u baahanahay inaan ilaalino badqabka ardaydeena iyo shaqaalaheena bartamaha howlaha go'aan gaarista. Sida laga soo xigtay warbixino badan oo aan aragnay, fiditaanka fayraska wuxuu kusii socdaa meelaha ugu horeysa ee ka baxsan iskuuladeena waxaanan ognahay inay tani leedahay awood ay ku sameyso xaaladaha bulshada kayar inta lagafiican yahay, taas oo iyana micnaheedu yahay awooddeena inaan sifiican ugu shaqaalaysiino fasallada waa yar tahay. Waxaan ku rajo weynahay markaan go'aankan gaadhno hadda qoysaska iyo shaqaaluhu inay heli doonaan fursad fiican oo ay ku qorsheeyaan xilliga kalaguurka.

Waxaan sii wadi doonnaa inaan dib u eegis ku sameyno xogtooda maxalliga ah lana hadalno hay'adahayaga caafimaadka si ay nooga caawiyaan qorshayntayada mustaqbalka. Waxaan mar kale kula soo xiriiri doonnaa Diisambar 17 si aan kuugu soo gudbino xaaladaha iyo qorshooyinka sanadka cusub. Waad ku mahadsantahay taageeradaada xilliyadan adag.

Caafimaad qabo Ammaan ahaw

Middle School Construction

Prior to the bond issue in 2018, we asked our school community about the type of design they wished to see for replacement middle schools. Throughout the process, you told us you like buildings with contemporary details or accents that are built with traditional materials. You also told us you want the middle schools to complement the other buildings in the district but have a distinct look specific to middle schools. The South-Western City School District has earned EVERFI’s Champion Seal, which was awarded to fewer than 5% of school districts across North America in 2020! The EVERFI Champion Seal is a designation awarded to K-12 school districts and schools that have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to whole-child education through the use of EVERFI’s evidence-informed digital programs in areas such financial literacy, social-emotional learning, college & career readiness, STEM, and health & wellness. Ohio’s ordered school-building closure and subsequent emergency legislation (House Bill 197 of the 133rd General Assembly) have substantial impacts on the state’s accountability system and Ohio School Report Cards for the 2019-2020 school year. Ohio School Report Cards, Dropout Prevention and Recovery Report Cards and Career-Technical Planning District Report Cards all contain multiple measures that use assessment data that will not be available or may be substantially limited this year.

There will be no grades assigned or rankings issued. The tables outline the data that will be reported publicly for informational and planning purposes only. The data will not factor into any graded measures or components. Measures primarily based on the spring state tests will not have data available this year. However, some measures are based on lagged (prior year) data and will be available as noted.
