The South Western City Schools English Learner Development (ELD) program is the third largest in the State of Ohio, serving more than 4,200 students annually. The purpose of the ELD program is to create an optimal educational setting in which English Learners (ELs) can work towards English Language proficiency - speak, write, and read - while being afforded opportunities for growth in and out of the classroom.

Goals of the ELD Program
1. To equip students with the tools necessary to attain English Proficiency
2. To tailor instruction to English Learners in a way that fosters and enhances the timely acquisition of the English language in order to meet content standards
3. To partner with families of English Learners by providing meaningful opportunities for engagement and collaboration that support student language development and academic success.

An International Community of Supports: Our Staff
EL student numbers
Every building offers support for the ELs at their site. Services are determined based on the language proficiency levels and needs of the students. We offer individualized English and content instruction at the secondary level and a variety of pull-out (1:1 and/or small group) and inclusion services at the elementary level.
  • TESOL Instructors: Students who are eligible for ELD services have access to opportunities and resources that will support the development of their English language skills. SWCS employs skilled staff who are specially trained in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). These TESOL-trained teachers, collaborate with content teachers to provide an excellent educational experience for our students who are learning the English language. The collective efforts of our staff members and families will ensure our students achieve proficiency on the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) and thrive in and out of school.
  • Language Support Assistants: Beyond TESOL instructors, SWCS also employs Language Support Assistants to supplement instruction, enhance daily communication needs, and help families be fully informed of their students’ progress if translation services are needed. Language Support Assistants are an invaluable part of our school day operations helping staff and families connect for student benefit.
