Each school year, our high school front offices routinely field inquiries from parents about Driver's Education as their students approach ages 15 and 16. As a district, we regrettably do not offer driver's education courses in our high schools as many families were accustomed to when growing up. In lieu of that, we have worked to create a list of area driver's education schools and programs for families that is readily accessible as they map out programs, costs, and schedules. This list should not be viewed as a district endorsement for or against any program provided.
NEW Drive to Succeed Grant
Four educational service centers (ESC) in Ohio will receive funding to provide driver training scholarships to eligible new drivers under age 21. The $6 million in grants is expected to fund scholarships for more than 10,000 Ohio driving students across all 88 counties based on financial need.
The Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety (ODPS/OTSO) promotes traffic safety messaging, research, and programming across Ohio to reduce traffic-related fatalities and injuries. As part of this mission, ODPS/OTSO created the Drive to Succeed program to help remove financial barriers to driver training for Ohio youth.

Ohio's Requirements for Under 21 Drivers
In Ohio there are three types of driving credentials for students under 21 years of age. These are as follows:
- Temporary Permits: Students can obtain a Temporary Permit starting at age 15 years and 6 months. See the section below for details. For more information on Temporary Permits click here.
- Probationary Licenses: To obtain a probationary license, a driver aged 16 or 17 must have a minimum of 24 hours of classroom or online instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed instructor under Ohio law. For more information on Probationary Licenses click here.
- Full Licenses: Once you turn 18-years-old, the protections of your probationary license are lifted, and you now have a full license. Further, starting on September 30, 2025, all Ohioans age 18, 19, and 20 will be required to complete 50 hours of driving practice supervised by a licensed adult and take an Ohio-approved “Class D” driver training course to receive a driver license. Click here for more information.
Starting October 1, any Ohioan under the age of 21 is now required to take driver's education.
